The Economic Crime and Corporate Transparency Act 2023 introduced identity verification for company directors and people with significant control (PSCs). Companies House has now confirmed that the legal requirements for identity verification will begin from 18 November 2025. How does this affect you if you are a director or a PSC?

You can verify your identity for Companies House through GOV.UK One Login (which is free) or by using an authorised corporate service provider, e.g. an accountant. Once you have successfully verified your identity, you will receive a Companies House personal code which is unique to you. You don’t need to wait until 18 November 2025 to verify your identity; you can do this now.

From 18 November 2025, you will then need to link your verified identity to your director and/or PSC role by providing your personal code and a verification statement for each role as follows:

  • existing directors must provide their personal code and a verification statement at the same time as they file the company’s next annual confirmation statement, during a twelve-month transition period, and this needs to be done for each director named on the confirmation statement – individuals with more than one directorship will be required to do this for each company separately, using the same personal code each time
  • new directors must provide their personal code and a verification statement to incorporate a new company or to be appointed to an existing company
  • existing PSCs who are also directors of the same company must provide their personal code as a PSC and a verification statement within 14 days of their company’s confirmation statement date (via an online service which will be made available when the requirement comes into force on 18 November 2025)
  • existing PSCs who are not directors of the same company must provide their personal code and a verification statement within the first 14 days of their birth month
  • new PSCs must provide their personal code and a verification statement within 14 days of being added to the Companies House register.

From 18 November 2025, directors and PSCs will also be able to check the Companies House register to see identity verification due dates for all their roles.

Identity verification requirements for limited partnerships, corporate directors of companies, corporate members of limited liability partnerships (LLPs), and officers of corporate PSCs will be introduced at a later date.
